Guide to CELPIP - General Test for Skilled Worker

Are you a skilled worker who's planning to work and live in Canada?  Did you know that one of the language tests that is accepted by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for immigration and citizenship purposes is the CELPIP test or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program?  The CELPIP test assesses the test taker's ability to function in English in a variety of day-to-day situations.

There are two types of CELPIP test: one is the CELPIP - General test and the other is the CELPIP - General Listening and Speaking test.  The CELPIP - General test is accepted by the IRCC for both immigration and citizenship purposes while the CELPIP - General LS test is accepted by the IRCC for citizenship purposes only.  

If you're a skilled worker planning to work and live in Canada, you must take the CELPIP - General test.

CELPIP - GENERAL TEST

This test assesses the test taker's English listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.  It is done in one sitting and takes about 3 hours to complete.

TEST COMPONENTS:

I - Listening

Duration: 47 - 55 minutes

Sections: You will listen to a variety of passages and then answer related questions.

  • Practice Task = 1 Question
  • Part 1 - Listening to Problem Solving = 8 Questions
  • Part 2 - Listening to a Daily Life Conversation = 5 Questions
  • Part 3 - Listening to Information = 6 Questions
  • Part 4 - Listening to a News Item = 5 Questions
  • Part 5 - Listening to a Discussion = 8 Questions
  • Part 6 - Listening to Viewpoints = 6 Questions

SCORING: All scores are computer rated.  All answers are scored dichotomously where it only be either correct or incorrect.

II - Reading

Duration: 55 - 60 minutes

Sections: You will read a variety of passages and then answer related questions.

  • Practice Task = 1 Question
  • Part 1 - Reading Correspondence = 11 Questions
  • Part 2 - Reading to Apply a Diagram = 8 Questions
  • Part 3 - Reading for Information = 9 Questions
  • Part 4 - Reading for Viewpoint = 10 Questions

SCORING: All scores are computer rated.  All answers are scored dichotomously where it only be either correct or incorrect.

III - Writing

Duration: 53 - 60 minutes

Sections: You will write a 150-200-word answer as a response to a question.

  • Task 1 - Writing an Email = 1 Question
  • Task 2 - Responding to Survey Questions = 1 Question

Performance Standards: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, and Task Fulfillment

SCORING: This component is scored by qualified raters following the performance standards.  A minimum of four writing raters will rate each CELPIP writing performance.

IV - Speaking

Duration: 15 - 20 minutes

Sections: You will verbally reply to on-screen prompts.

  • Practice Task = 1 Question
  • Task 1 - Giving Advice = 1 Question
  • Task 2 - Talking about a Personal Experience = 1 Question
  • Task 3 -  Describing a Scene = 1 Question
  • Task 4 - Making Predictions = 1 Question
  • Task 5 - Comparing and Persuading = 1 Question
  • Task 6 - Dealing with a Difficult Situation = 1 Question
  • Task 7 - Expressing Opinions = 1 Question
  • Task 8 - Describing an Unusual Situation = 1 Question

Performance Standards: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment

SCORING: This component is scored by qualified raters following the performance standards.  A minimum of three speaking raters will rate each CELPIP speaking performance.

NOTE: The Listening and Reading Tests contain unscored items which have the same format as scored items.  This is used for test development and to encourage test takers to do their best for all the items since they won't be able to distinguish which are scored items and which are unscored items.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE:

  1. Create a CELPIP Account - Visit celpip.ca then click Sign In.
  2. Sign in to your CELPIP Account
  3. Register - Select the city, region, and country where you'd like to take the CELPIP test and then register for your chosen test center and test date.
  4. Choose identification - You may choose from a list of acceptable identifications which personal identification to provide during your test date.
  5. Confirm information and payment option - You may submit a paper test registration form through mail with an alternative form of payment or pay online via credit card.
  6. Receive test confirmation email - You must receive this once payment has been processed and remember to bring this with you during your test day.

TEST DAY REMINDERS:

What to bring:

  1. Valid ID - You must bring the same ID you used to register for the test.  It must be original, valid, and not expired.  If you're not able to provide your valid ID during check-in, you will not be allowed to take the test and will not be able to refund or transfer your test.
  2. Test Confirmation Email - You must bring a digital or print copy of you test confirmation email.  You must receive this email upon registration and it should contain your registration number, name, sitting information, and identification requirements.  Also, make sure to check the contents of the email's content especially your name, it must be the same as on your chosen valid ID.

Procedure:

Before the Test/Check-in

  1. You must arrive 45 minutes before your test.  Check-in ends 15 minutes before the scheduled test time and latecomers will not be able to enter and will not be eligible for a transfer of test or refund.
  2. Only your valid ID can be brought in the test room.  All other belongings are stored in a locker or personal belongings bag.  So, it is advised not to bring valuables.
  3. After check-in, you will be seated in the test room and you may not leave your seat unescorted.  Thus, it is advised to use the washroom before check-in.

During the Test

  1. A pen and a notepaper will be provided for you to use, however, it must be returned at the end of the test
  2. Raise your hand if you need anything during the test or if you need a washroom break, however, do know that your test time will not stop for anything even for washroom breaks.

Rules:

  1. Do not use scented products, like perfumes, colognes, and aftershaves, on test day since it may affect the other test takers.
  2. It is advised not to bring your children with you at the test center since children are not allowed in the test room.

TEST RESULTS

  • Your CELPIP Test scores are available 4 to 5 days after your test date and can be accessed online through your CELPIP account.  Once your scores are posted and available, a notification email will be sent to you and you will be able to download your CELPIP Official Score Report as a PDF.  Your CELPIP Test scores will be available and accessible in your CELPIP account for 2 years from your test date.
  • If you'd like to order a hardcopy of your Official Score Report, you may do so through your CELPIP account but for an extra charge.  You can do this within 2 years from your test date. Priority shipping is available but also for an additional charge.
  • If you're not convinced with your results, you may apply for a score re-evaluation for some or all components of your CELPIP - General Test within six months from your test date.  A payment is collected upon application for re-evaluation and it will only be refunded if the CELPIP General level changes.  However, the results for Listening and Reading components are unlikely to change since it is computer rated.
  • If you need to retake the test, you may register again after 4 days from your previous test date.

TEST SCORES

Each of the four components of the test is given a CELPIP level. Here is the description and CLB Level equivalent of each CELPIP score according to Paragon Testing Enterprises:
